LAS VEGAS — Datrelle "DKO" Kozeluh didn’t find MMA; it found him.
The son of a karate national champion and the nephew of a black belt, Datrelle says he inherited the fight game. Or perhaps it inherited him.
“I grew up wrestling and grappling. I’ve been around since the Tito Ortiz days; he used to be my favorite fighter,” Datrelle says on the eve of his highly anticipated professional MMA debut at Elite Fight Night 1 in Gary, IN Saturday.
Datrelle isn’t like some fighters, who insist they’d be dead or in jail had they not taken the MMA route. “I’m pretty confident in my intelligence,” the charming 22-year-old fighter says with a smile. Still, he’s doing everything he can to go as far as he can in MMA.
“Once you feel the high of winning an MMA fight, you’re set for life,” he says after a recent training session.
Datrelle has long approached MMA as a career, so nothing will change too drastically now that he’s a professional fighter. He’s taking it one fight at a time, but he’s not interested in wasting any time either.
“In a year, I want to be 3-0 or 4-0 as a professional, looking forward to bigger fights, bigger money, bigger shows — everything bigger.”
